The night before, I made arrangements to meet Rita's parents
without her knowing. I prepared my plea and readied myself for
the dowry negotiation (just kidding, Rita)! After a much needed
drink, I popped the parent question! A tear or two flowed, and
they graciously offered their blessing and congratulations! (Deep
down, I think Rita's Dad was thinking, "it's about darn time")!
Now, I explored many ways to pop the big question to Rita - from
the extravagant to simple. Being under strict instructions to NOT
propose in public. I decided to tie this moment to a special place
to me, my church. Now, don't think for a moment that this
sentimental play will ever be used, say, at Christmas in order to
get Rita to my nephew's Christmas concert! Yea! Our outing was
set to walk thorough my old neighbourhood and visit family and
friends. We departed on our "tour" in the 100 degree heat. I
prioritized key sights such as the my old school and my old house.
Our last tour stop was the 160-foot brick-clad Bell Tower -a recent
addition to my church. I handed my digital camera to a man
standing admiring the tower waiting for it to sound and nervously
proclaimed, "I'm going to give her the rock so snap away." Joining
Rita under the tower, I reached for her hands (details become a
bit sketchy about now). By this time, she realized what was
unfolding, mostly given that I had become speechless (this is a
rare occurrence for me). Admittedly, between tears I mustered a
few choice romantic words and made my request. She quickly said
YES (of course!) and I handed her the ring. Still shaking, she
asked me to unwrap the little pink gift box. I opened the box to her
gasp and slid the ring on her finger. Needless to say, Rita was
very excited as was I. With the makeshift photographer still
snapping away nearby, we turned for one final pose with a shiny
ring on her finger and mutual grins from ear-to-ear! This was our
day, June 3, 2006 - the day all the real planning started.
